After a Storm – Before Signing on the Dotted Line
Has your home suffered damage from a storm? If so, before you sign a Post-Loss Assignment from your contractor, make sure you know what you’re agreeing to.
*Please note, this does not mean every contractor is going to ask for this. There are several trustworthy contractors around our local communities, many that Gary Thompson Agency is proud to provide insurance needs to. We’re simply sharing this so you’re aware of possible situations that can arise, most commonly when several contractors flock into an area with extensive storm damages.
The attachment below was released by the Nebraska Department of Insurance with information for you regarding Post-Loss Assignments.
A Post-Loss Assignment may be requested by contractors however NOT all contractors require this. After your damage has been assessed by an adjuster and a contractor – before the contractor begins work, they may ask they you sign a post-loss assignment. It’s important to know exactly what you are signing and know that you are NOT required to sign this. If you do sign it, you’re now handing over all rights and duties to the claim over to the contractor which can lead to potential issues for you as the insured.
